THE LONG STORY

Alan Briggs battled with God about church ministry and eventually lost while kneeling on nasty carpet in his dorm room. After a season of work and travel through Antarctica and New Zealand he began to itch for connection to a place. This is where the Staying is the new Going message was birthed. In 2006 he put down roots and began pastoring at Vanguard Church. In 2007 his burden for equipping leaders for ministry led to the birth of the Ministry Apprentice Program.

Alan is the Director of Frontline Church Planting, a network and equipping hub for church startups and missional churches in Colorado. He is also the Multiplying Pastor at Vanguard Church in Colorado Springs where he makes disciples and trains leaders to multiply. His speaking and writing focus on equipping and unlocking God’s people for effective ministry inside and outside the family of God. His book Staying is the New Going: Choosing to love where God places you released September 1st. His second book Guardrails; Six Principles for a Multiplying Church focuses on simple ways to make disciples in real life. It releases in September 2016. This is a simple and foundational look at making disciples in the midst of real life. He has written for Relevant, Christianity Today, Leadership Journal, Boundless, Church Planter Magazine, Outreach and The SEND Network.

Alan loves the church and believes disciples should be apprenticed through an immersion into relational, experiential and formal learning. He speaks, leads and consults for groups in a variety of settings.

He and his wife Julie have four kids, two adopted and two biological. Their journey toward adoption started in Julie’s heart when she was a teenager serving in Russia. Adoption is the hardest and best thing Alan and Julie have ever done. While Julie is more knowledgeable about the world of adoption, they try to be a support to adoptive families however they can.

Alan has always had a passion for adventure, craft and people. He loves climbing, camping and fly fishing. He tries to make cool stuff out of reclaimed wood and occasionally succeeds. He will grill any kind of meat he is given and indulges in copious amounts of coffee. He has fallen in love with his city, Colorado Springs, and is excited about the web of amazing culture changers there. Every year he, his brother and dad explore the ins and outs of a “B rated” city in the U.S. in what has become known as “City-A-Year”.

Their family focuses on building bridges to the lost, largely in the context of their neighborhood. He and his family love connecting with their neighbors on their front lawn and trying crazy ideas including Free Coffee Friday. He reluctantly joined the board at the elementary school across the street and finally has a good attitude about it. Alan is grateful every day for the grace of God and for the adventure of joining God’s mission.
